Apple’s forthcoming iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max may finally include an always-on display. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple may include the functionality in iOS 16, allowing the iPhone to display limited information even while it is locked.

According to Gurman, the iPhone’s version of always-on mode could work similarly to how it does with the Apple Watch Series 5 and up — with always-on mode enabled, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will reduce the lock screen’s frame rate, allowing them to conserve energy while the display remains powered on.

It’s unclear if the next iPhone will feature the same low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) display seen in Apple’s latest Watch models. Because they are designed to avoid devices from consuming too much power, these low-powered displays play a significant role in making always-on mode operate smoothly.
