Researchers at Lomonosov Moscow State University published a paper showing how a common sunscreen ingredient, avobenzone, breaks down into a hazardous component when mixed with chlorinated water.

Bite 3 — The Mystery of Why Roman Concrete is So Strong

  • In American Mineralogist, which I’m sure many of you have subscriptions to, an international group of scientists discovered that a rare chemical reaction takes place when Roman concrete is submerged in salt water.
  • Roman concrete is filled with tiny growing aluminous tobermorite crystals. The crystals, like tiny armor plates, may keep the concrete from fracturing.
