The Importance of Getting Quality Rest

I really wish I had learned way sooner in life the importance of actually listening to what my body is trying to tell me on a daily basis. For the longest time, especially when I was deep in career grind mode in my 20s, I would just push push push with little regard for signs that I was wearing myself thin. Now that I’m a bit older and wiser, I realize taking those breaks I needed back then could have saved me so much unnecessary stress and burnout down the line.

The thing is, our bodies are constantly giving us cues throughout the day about how we’re feeling and what we need — we just have to tune in to notice them. At first, the signals can be really subtle like yawning more, having trouble focusing your eyes, or feeling less patient than usual. But if you ignore those initial whispers, eventually the messages get loud. Suddenly your lower back is shrieking in pain, a migraine is pounding, or you’re so irritable you wanna break things.

It definitely took me some trial and error to learn how to read my body language fluently. Now I pay close attention to those little cues so I can intervene with strategic rest before things spiral downhill. Because once the damage is done, it’s way harder to undo all that fatigue! There have been times over the years where I look back and think “If only 20-year-old me had taken a quick breather when I started feeling sluggish, I could’ve avoided so much unnecessary suffering later on.”

I think one big thing that helps is having a diverse toolkit of rest techniques on hand so you always have quick and easy options that work for your situation. Like for mild fatigue, just closing your eyes and taking 5 cleansing breaths could do wonders. When it’s time for a longer break, going for a walk outside while listening to tunes or calling a friend can work magic. And of course, using vacation days strategically to fully unplug from work helps too.

It’s also key to experiment and see what energy drains or recharges you most as an individual. Certain hobbies might relax one person but stress another! I’ve found things like cooking, playing with my dog in nature, or a dance party with good music and no responsibility to always refill my cup like nothing else. Figuring out your personal reset buttons is clutch.

Overall I’m a much happier, healthier, and more effective human now that I prioritize listening closely to what my body needs from moment to moment. Taking those micro and macro breaks prevents burnout while boosting my mood, focus, and longevity big time. So whether it’s 5 minutes or 5 whole vacation days, don’t be afraid to hit pause when your inner radar signals it’s time to recharge. Your mind, body, and productivity will all thank you for it later!
