I'm writing a book for Seal Press. WHERE ARE ALL THE LESBIANS is a cultural history, celebration, and critical look at queer women's communities in the second half of the 20th century, as told through six archetypal spaces. It's due out in summer 2024. I worked at Slate magazine for 25 years. When I left in April 2022, I was senior managing producer of Slate podcasts. I also wrote about television, movies, and books; launched Outward, Slate's LGBTQ section; and was the foreign and travel editor for many years. Earlier titles included West Coast Editor, Managing Editor, Copy Chief, and Copy Editor.

As a freelancer, I’ve written for Bloomberg Businessweek, Bloomberg Pursuits, CondeNastTraveler.com, Marie Claire, New York Newsday, New York Times T Magazine, Pacific Standard, and the Advocate, where I was a columnist for two years.

I started podcasting in 2005. My first audio production was the Explainer podcast--basically a recorded version of the daily magazine feature of the same name. (Hey, those were early days!) I've hosted several other shows since, including Afterword, a series of interviews with the authors of nonfiction books; the semi-official behind-the-scenes podcast about the FX TV series The Americans (I was host from Season 4 until the end of the show's run); and several TV show recap podcasts, including Downton Abbey, Better Call Saul, and Game of Thrones (those are mostly behind the Slate Plus paywall, alas). I was a host of The Waves, a show about feminism and gender, for many years, and I've been a co-host of Working, Slate's podcast about the creative process since April 2020. I also produce Outward, Slate's LGBTQ show.
