It of course depends on personality types, but I have never had a problem with declining meetings or saying “no” to team members.

The obvious tip is to set your status on Slack as “away” or close the Gmail tab on your browser.

The action that has worked for me is to cut through the chit chat: when team members say “hi” to me on Slack, I respond with, “How can I help you today?”. This cuts through the small talk and quickly gets to the core of what they need.

Eventually, you can train your team to respect your time, and hopefully in turn, to respect their time as well.
