I think people being displaced will certainly include many “intelligent” people. Moreover, there are many “intelligent” people who drive trucks. Meet more people if you don’t understand this yet.

That aside, the biggest issue is there is no real planning for displacement and no accountability by those who are creating the things that will displace (not that I necessarily think they are up to the task). Many upper middle class workers will get displaced as well — doctors, lawyers, accountants, software engineers — people who believe they worked harder. Everyone can plan, but inevitably people will get stuck in the middle. Many will take a tumble. I do not feel excited about that. I don’t care if a car someone else owns will drive me around. I like driving, actually. While scientific innovations are interesting, those only applied to a few precious lives is unethical. AI…a very huge risk…and yet we go glibbly along pretending we can control the monster. Shelley wrote about that. At least we’ll have cool spaceships so we can leave. As Nick Cave said, “Hands up, who wants to die?”
