I believe deism does resolve the infinite regress because we only have to ask “who created that God?” if an entity cannot exist without creation. When you step outside of the laws of physics you also have the opportunity to stop obeying them.
A God who was eternal and “self-creating” can’t really work in a universe like our own which seems to indicate that things don’t pop into existence randomly, but would have no trouble coming to existence if it weren’t for the trivial constraints we face in this universe. Hence, if we posit God exists and created out universe then it’s logical to assume he’s not confined by the rules he himself created.
Science tells us our universe began as a condensed singularity that exploded in a unidirectional big bang. Prior to the big bang theory physicists thought the universe was an eternal state like what I believe you’re describing.
