Building My First Alexa Skill

After a lot of reading and walking through tutorial information, I finally did it! I completed my first skill for Amazon’s Alexa Voice Service.

I am currently learning web development through an online program called Bloc, and my current project has me making new Alexa skills using the Node.js framework. For my first skill, I created a simple trivia game based on National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

There are a lot of tutorials out there, and the one I worked through was pretty straight forward. It does take some time to understand the skill development process, though. For most simple skills, it seems like there are a lot of templates and blueprints available to work from as well. In the end, my first skill didn’t really require much coding at all. I was able to take a template, switch out example questions/answers for my own, and voila, my first skill was pretty much ready for submission.

Now that I have the process for using Lambda and the Amazon Developer site figured out, I expect the next skill’s creation to go pretty smoothly.
