What Should Be Our Attitude Towards Poor People In Society?
Poverty is not a crime. If you are poor, it was more because of God’s decision. Of course, it can also be because of negative human elements like laziness, poor choices, luxurious living etc. But on the whole, being poor most of the time is not in our hands.
I give tithe every month to poor people in society. I had been doing this for the past 20+ years. Nowadays I have some financial difficulties in my life. Even then at the end of every month, I try to give a tithe to less fortunate people in society.
Why God created poor people?
One answer would be to make us realise that we should be thankful to God at all times. I see many beggars wandering in the streets without proper clothing or protection against the extreme weather of Kerala. Millions of people, including children go hungry every day. Some of them even die out of hunger.
I love Mother Teresa and her congregation’s ‘Missionaries of Charity.’ They first fill the empty stomachs and then only preach the love of God. That is the most important reason for the stupendous growth of their community.
Every human being living in this world has a story to tell about hardships, rejection, poverty, loneliness etc. As a member of the big family called the human race, every one of us must help our brethren who are living around us.
I advise all of you to listen emphatically to people who come to you, who are either materially poor or emotionally weak and find it difficult to proceed in life. If possible give them some money to help them in their struggle with life. Don’t ever think that helping the poor and needy is the sole duty of government and charity organisations.
Always remember that we are fortunate to be born into a good family, without much difficulty with money. Hence always thank God for his mighty blessings and remain a living testimony of God’s love and mercifulness by helping other people.
