The power of “if”

Not a word that we often think of as having power but it’s something that came up in conversation a few weeks ago. It’s always been a word of hesitation for me. “If” this happens THEN I can do that. “If” I’ve accomplished this THEN I’m qualified to do that. It’s been a word that tells me I need to wait for something before another action can happen.

Having this mindset has stopped me from pursuing opportunities large and small. In this use of the word “if” there is no power, I’m only waiting for things to happen rather than pursuing them.

The reason for this is because I’m relying on myself for these things to happen. This comes with the comfort of life I live in. I wake up with a roof over my head, food in the fridge, clothes in my dresser and a job to go to. Those things have all provided some type of comfort in my life that has taken me away from risks.

That’s the reason we moved to Chicago, to find an uncomfortable spot in a comfortable time in our life. And it’s when we’re in an uncomfortable spot that we start putting ourselves out there. “If” you give me an opportunity, I won’t let you down. That word takes on a different tone when failure isn’t an option.
