My employer has adopted one of these innovative approaches. They built a point-of-sale medical care facility operated by a contracted provider. Consumers like me see big discounts for things like physical therapy, office visits, and even chiropractor or acupuncture treatment.

I pay a lot less to consume health services this way than I would going in-network through the insurance the employer provides. I end up consuming more services (because it costs less and is more convenient to schedule), but insurance never sees that higher consumption; from their view, I consume less than ever because there’s never a claim filed with them. Certainly this will reduce costs to my employer while also improving outcomes for me as a consumer. Win, win.
