This is one in a series of essays that was originally conceived as a book for print publication. If you enjoy it and would like to read more from the collection, you can find a sort of Table of Contents here.

We’ve all been taught that honesty is the best policy.

Interestingly, we’ve also all been taught the exact opposite when it comes to things like taxes, speed limit, office supplies, time cards, discussing sex with our kids, the extent of our drinking problem, the size of our paychecks, and just about anything else that can be labeled a “little white lie.”

I don’t get it.

Little White Lies

A lie is a lie, regardless of its size or color. Let’s not discriminate. I mean, what is it we want our kids to avoid? Telling us “big black lies?” Not only does that sound racist and weird, it teaches a really scary lesson: I don’t mind if you lie to me as long as you’ve given it some thought and you feel it’s in my best interests.
