This is one in a series of essays that was originally conceived as a book for print publication. If you enjoy it and would like to read more from the collection, you can find a sort of Table of Contents here.

Hopefully you don’t need me to convince you of the benefits of chilling out.

It’s established scientific and medical fact that stress kills. Increased stress has been directly linked as either a cause of, or a contributing factor to, heart disease, high blood pressure, headaches, body aches, depression, even some forms of cancer. And it weakens the immune system, leaving the body vulnerable to a host of other maladies.

Not to mention how poorly most of us perform when we’re stressed out. It’s bad for productivity, bad for clarity and accuracy, and very bad for decision making.

Yet, the world we live in continues to pile on the stress. The corporate world is slow to put aside the failed paradigm of “multitasking”, and the wavering economy continues to force businesses and individuals to do more with less, often resulting in poorer quality services and products which breed further stress down the road as disappointed clients start to complain.
