Cheaper groceries: how people are beating the supermarkets
Everyone wants to save more at the supermarket checkout, but this hasn’t always been so easy.

Are you one of those shoppers that resents having to pay full price for everyday products? If so, you’re not alone.
Across Australia, countless families try to stretch their budget and maintain a comfortable living standard. This difficult situation leaves many getting less for their money, making sacrifices on the quality and quantity of their purchases.
Being students ourselves, we are all too familiar with these pressures. This is why we’ve been building SpotSave — so people can save a lot more using price comparison and Watchlist special notifications. Our focus is on helping people reduce their grocery bill with ease.
Competition between the supermarkets is fierce despite the dominance of major chains — Coles and Woolworths. As it stands, the majority of shoppers are not fully taking advantage of this environment. We don’t blame them either, flipping through catalogues or spending time in shopping aisles trying to reduce your spend is very time-consuming.
Your SpotSave Watchlist
Supermarkets are always trying to entice shoppers into their stores with lots of specials. Your personal Watchlist takes advantage of this. With a simple swipe right, add any product to your watchlist and you’ll receive a notification when it comes on special at your selected store/s.
Buying your favourite products on your watchlist can easily save you 20–25% off the regular price and often more.
We plan to give you more customisation options for notifications in the future so you can specify whether you only want to be alerted when specials are more than $x.xx or a percentage discount.
Savings Tip: Wait until your favourite products come on special in your Watchlist. For the average product, this will happen quite often. Also, try stocking up on specials to get bulk buy savings.
Shopping list automated price comparison
At any one time, there is significant variation in the price on many products between the chains. SpotSave lets you see how much your shopping list is at Woolworths and Coles, so you’ll always shop at the cheapest store.
With a couple of taps, you can see how much you stand to save by shopping at either store.
Saving $20–30 on a $130 weekly shop has been easy for many of our users.
Savings Tip:
- Add items to your shopping list by holding down on any product in your Watchlist or Explore.
- Tap on the wand at the top of your shopping list and see how much you can save by shopping at one store over another.
The savings will stack up over time and can amount to $100s-1000s every year. Try combining this with a few other tips to saving at the supermarket and you’ll be set to slash your grocery bill.
