It’s incredible that I stumbled across this today. Just last night I was talking to a friend about the Punkt MP01, which I had discovered earlier in the day.
We began by talking about how a stripped down phone might work for people who aren’t hipsters or models in a world where smartphones and constant Internet connectivity are increasingly essential.
After a few New Years Eve drinks, we finally got to this question:
What if the MP01 could accept the iPhone’s SIM tray?
If that were the case, a phone like the MP01 could actually be even more simplified. If one could simply pop the SIM card out of your iPhone and push it into your “dumb” altphone for an afternoon of writing. You make some good cases for other potential altphones (you call it NewPhone, we were a little tipsy and thought altphone sounded cool), and I think you have it right: there is room for an alternate to your smart phone.
The key would be in helping users move their core data and identity from phone to phone. Swapping SIMs gets us there for a simple dumb phone, perhaps the cloud is what bridges that between multiple smart phones? I don’t know, but I do know it was very interesting to read your piece the day after having a related conversation based on a chance encounter with the Punkt MP01.
