What did you do this past week?
I came back Monday morning from a rave in Houston and jumped straight into my courses. I talked to Dr. Lin about starting to do research next semester in Distributed Systems. He recommended I talk to professors Vijay or Simon Peter who work in virtualization, multi-core operating systems, and networks. I worked on and finished the new Darwin project with my partner and had a phone call with Google about my official offer letter. I found out that Google has a policy where it doesn’t negotiate for internships, even if you have strong leverage. I’m excited about the project I would be working on at Google, so I signed their offer nonetheless. On Thursday, I attended the graduate school info session with Dr. Vouga and Dr. Lin because I’m getting closer to graduation and have to start thinking about the future. I’m excited to get involved in research in the coming year.
What’s in your way?
I do have a couple more weekend commitments in the upcoming weeks. I am writing this blog currently from College Station where I am attending a talent show called Isang Mahal. I will be flying out next Thursday to New York to tour around Bloomberg and get to know some engineers. Also, I do have my last Operating Systems project on system calls, which seems pretty long and challenging.
What will you do next week?
Next week I will have to finish my Operating Systems project early since I won’t have that much time after Thursday. I will also have a Government exam and an Individual Differences exam on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively. I’m glad I finished the Darwin project early because I will not have time to deal with that next week.
What was your experience of the vector implementation? (this question will vary, week to week)
I actually had a bit of trouble following the first week of the vector implementation because I did not realize we could use existing functions that we learned such as copy(). The second week, when we used the assignment constructor to implement the copy constructor, I had a better time doing the HackerRank.
What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?
My tip of the week is about how people view college. When I first thought about going to college, I saw it as a black-box period of time where the end goal was to make a bunch of money. I’ve since realized that college provides an environment that gives you many opportunities to experience new things. As computer science students, there’s really no need to worry about getting a job. What’s more scarce is the time you have in college to enjoy the unique experience of being young.
