This is one of the (many) places that capitalism falls short as the funder of the arts. When wealth is this stratified, this calcified, and this racialized, I think the situation that you’re describing is virtually inevitable. I think we should interrogate the root causes of these issues. In short, it’s racist, but it’s also classist. The two are inevitably interwined. This is one of the reasons why philanthropy freaks me out. It’s like we’re all finally waking up to the fact that we’ve been living under Citizens United, but for the arts — even worse, it’s ALWAYS been this way.
