Fish

We sat on your bed
and we kissed
like each other’s lips were water
and we were fish gasping for breath beneath the waves
after living in a mud puddle for days

There was something that pulled me to you
like the moon
pulls the belly of the ocean to the shoreline

And after that night
I was rapidly changing

In three and a half years
We held tight to the guard rails
through the most intense of storms
but when the sun would shine,
boy, it would shine
and we’d burn our skin under its lucent rays
carelessly basking

But the storms always came back
and harbored on our doc
longer each time around

until we’d had enough
of holding on to guard rails
for the sake of each other’s breath

and we let go

and drifted off out into the ocean
Like the two little fish that we always were

They say there are more fish in the sea
and I know this is true…
but I’ve yet to find another fish that kisses me
like my lips are water
and he’s been living in a mud puddle trying to breath
for days
