Negotiating Prices Isn’t Scary — They Have It!

One of the best parts of meeting a potential customer is getting to know them. The worst part? Telling them how much you cost. I can’t count the number of times I’ve known from a client’s facial expression whether they’d walk away or be pleasantly surprised at how affordable our services are.

Let me share a story that highlights the importance of valuing your work and standing firm on your prices.

The client asked, “How much?”

I confidently replied, “$20,000.”

He started laughing, saying it wasn’t in his budget. I smiled and said, “Yes, it is.” He turned to Doryan and asked if that’s why he brought me — to get all his money. I chuckled and reassured him, “Ahh, you have the money.”

After some negotiation, we settled on $12,000, including travel. He was initially hesitant but eventually agreed, and we sent him a contract. When the project was complete, he was flabbergasted. He now had enough video instruction content to run a whole school. He gave me the biggest hug and I said, “When you make millions, you owe me 8 grand.” He laughed and replied, “That and more, Mackleen. That and more.”

This experience taught me never to regret charging more, especially when you know how satisfied the client will be.

Here are some takeaways to help you confidently negotiate your prices:

1. Understand Your Value

Know the worth of your services. Quality work demands a fair price, and your experience and expertise are valuable.

2. Communicate Benefits

Clearly explain how your services will benefit the client. When they see the value, they’ll understand why it costs what it does.

3. Be Confident

Confidence is key in negotiations. If you believe in the value of your work, your clients will too.

4. Stay Flexible but Firm

While it’s okay to negotiate, don’t undersell yourself. Know your bottom line and stick to it.

5. Build Trust

Transparency and honesty go a long way. When clients trust you, they’re more likely to agree to your prices.

6. Follow Up

After delivering exceptional work, check in with your clients. Satisfied customers are likely to return and refer you to others.

7. Value Your Time and Effort

Remember that your time, effort, and resources are valuable. Pricing should reflect the quality and effort you put into your work.

In the end, charging fair prices is about recognizing your worth and ensuring that both you and your clients are satisfied with the outcome. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you deserve — because they have it!
