Fallout Shelter was the icing on the cake to Bethesda’s E3 2015 blowout, and was the only thing gamers talked about for a good week after all the initial reveals. However, the game didn’t last beyond some funny Tinder related press, and a couple of Holiday themed updates. At the end of the day, it mostly felt like a cool gimmick that needed more depth so it wouldn’t overstay it’s welcome. And after the release of Fallout 4 and most of it’s DLC, Bethesda is going all in on their other Wasteland related properties. So does the bunker manager/scavenging sim get better on PC? Here’s our verdict.
Gameplay:
In the mouse and keyboard version of Fallout Shelter, Bethesda has changed things somewhat significantly in order to cater to a less pick up and play oriented experience. This mostly surrounds the management of your Wastelanders, and new quest changes. This makes it much harder to achieve the quick end-game goal many did when they binged Fallout Shelter last year, which is a good thing.
Story & Design:
The new story details added with these quests isn’t too spectacular, but at the end of the day it is nice to see more official lore in the Fallout universe. The micro-transactions also don’t sneak up on you like one would suppose, a true testament about Bethesda’s non-greediness to their players and most dedicated fans.
Presentation/ Visuals & Audio:
In terms of PC presentation, Fallout Shelter adds new display modes, on top of not much else. The requirements are pretty weak so it makes sense why these aspects weren’t changed, but it still is a bit disappointing to see nothing else revamped. Never the less, these display modes are a bit more convenient than what you would have to deal with on your phone.
Conclusion:
Fallout Shelter’s PC port doesn’t drastically rewrite the formula, but does change one or two things here and there so players who already played the game won’t get immediately bored. At the end of the day it is a bit of fan service, but the fact that this is releasing for free doesn’t hurt.
