Quest of Dungeons Review

A couple weeks in, and there still isn’t much to play during January. Gamers either attack their backlog, or anticipate other titles in the meantime. Sometimes, developers have used this to their benefit if their title lacks a higher sense of intrigue when compared to holiday releases. However, it’s uncommon to see this with indies. The recently released rogue-like, Quest of Dungeons, nevertheless has a chance. But does it fulfill on this alone, excel, or fall deeper into inconsistency?

Gameplay:

One of the genres I love to see a breath of personality in are rogue-likes, but Quest of Dungeons doesn’t implement any signs of this. As you start the game, you’ll notice that the class selection is pretty straightforward, and things don’t get much better when transcending deeper into the gameplay. And while it happens to be turn-based, it lacks the proper challenge and feels inappropriate, mostly because of a hefty design flaw.

Story & Design:

This aforementioned piece may be the game’s biggest weakness, and players will soon realize how it affects the game’s flow once they notice it. Basically, you can gain health back without worry, and this even works for some of the game’s proposed finales such as boss fights. This kind of removes any sense of purpose from playing Quest of Dungeons, which could temper many rogue-like fans.

Presentation/ Visuals & Audio:

Luckily, Quest of Dungeons does contain a handful of strengths in the presentation department. I was fond of the soundtrack, and I thought some of the game’s shopkeepers gave liveliness the game desperately needed. Unfortunately, the environments were very bland, so these emotions were lessened.

Conclusion:

If it didn’t contain preposterous design choices, Quest of Dungeons could have been a decent rogue-like to start off the new year. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case, and fans of the genre may leave with a sour taste in their mouth if they choose to pick this title up.

Quest of Dungeons gets a 4/10 (Bad)
