What Causes Those Dark Spots on Your Skin and How Can You Treat Them?
When you were younger, your skin was smooth and even without a lot of variations in tone. When you look in the mirror today, though, you see dark spots across your face, neck, chest, and arms. How did those get there? What are they? And how can you get rid of them?
Most of the darkened spots you see across your face and arms are initially caused by acne and blemishes, and they’re worsened over time by UV exposure. As you get older, they become more and more apparent, and you feel the need to wear more and more concealer to cover them. Fortunately, however, you can put the concealer brush down because there are actually very effective and simple ways to treat these spots and regain your even, beautiful, and youthful skin tone again.
Exfoliate or Get a Chemical Peel
If you’ve just noticed some new dark spots and you have otherwise healthy skin, your solution may be as simple as using a good exfoliating scrub whenever you wash your face or take a shower. If this doesn’t work to your satisfaction, you may be able to get rid of them with a chemical peel at your favorite medical spa.
A chemical peel uses a paste of enzymes and nutrients spread over your face that will actually eat away the top layer(s) of skin, getting rid of fine lines, rough skin, and uneven skin tones. Chemical peels leave behind young, fresh skin that’s much more even and beautiful, and it’ll stay that way if you use the right skin care products and protect it from sun exposure, too.
Try an At-Home Remedy
Some dark spots and blotches can actually be treated at home if you have the right household ingredients. Applying fresh lemon juice with a cotton ball can often fade newer dark spots, but be careful not to get any in or near your eyes. You could also create a face pack paste out of grated cucumber, lime extract, and milk and apply it to your face for 10 minutes before washing it away to reveal lighter, more uniform skin.
Of course, these home remedies are really only good for less severe dark spots and may not clear them up entirely. For more effective treatment that works quickly and lasts, you’ll want prescription-strength, customized products to do the job.
