In 1868 the inventor of the typewriter was born, the first black African American congressman, John Willis Menard, was elected to the U.S.A. congress for the State of Louisiana, the Emperor of Ethiopia suicided, Ulysses S, Grant was elected president of U.S.A., General Custer killed Chief Black Kettle at the Battle of Wichita River, the Italian composer Rossini died, and on 7 November, the clipper ship Thermopylae left London on her maiden voyage to Melbourne.

We know from the captain’s log, that Thermopylae crossed the equator 22 days later (also a speed record), which, if the ship sailed at a consistent rate for the first 2 weeks and we pick up the action on the second Sunday, that means at a rate of about 2.3 degrees (about 100kms on land) per day.
