The Role of a Product Manager

This post has dragged some lurking thoughts and suspicions that have been circulating in the back of my mind.

There seems to be a growing expectation that product managers need to be super-heroes.

They’re supposed to drive vision, strategy, tactics, execution, culture and communication. Anything else left?

When people have asked me to help them find product managers who can do all this, I laugh and say that I know 20 of these people. And all of them have started their own company.

We’re expecting product managers to be just like founders but happy to work for someone else.

Perhaps large companies will develop and nurture these people for a while, but soon enough, they’ll work out that if they meet the exorbitant demands companies are piling on them for product management, they’re better off and better equipped doing their own thing.
