Chicago Marathon [race report]
After living in Chicago for almost four years and getting rejected from the Marathon lottery, I had to come back to run it.
Overall it was a great event. Actually the best marathon I’ve participated in so far. From logistics to course, and the amazing crowd cheering during the whole race (all you guys were awesome). I was lucky to see some friends during the race! Now let’s analyze what went well and what went wrong.
Ohh wait did I mention I have a new PR? 3:55:21. Finally sub 4h!

What went well:
- Nutrition. Almond butter and jelly toasts are working great as pre-race breakfast. Also during the race I had 3 gels and I didn’t drink that much gatorade. I felt strong without stomach issues.
- Consistent pace.
- Don’t play music till mile 14!
What to improve next time:
- Pre-race training & nutrition. I barely ran the week before the race.
- Proper training. My main focus was Santa Cruz 70.3 and TNF 50 in December. But with a few longer runs I could’ve finished stronger.
- Optimize the race. According to my Garmin I ended up running 28.3mi.
- Post race logistics. Left all my belongings with a friend and couldn’t find him after the race.
- 00:50:21 minutes to qualify for Boston!
It’s been a fun couple of days. Coming back to Chicago after almost a year, seeing friends, running, and grabbing a couple beers with the Liferay folks.
