A little thing called privacy
One thing I knew my whole life is that nothing in this world is for free, but never applied this principle to the internet thoughtfully.
Each one of us create accounts and use different platforms, from web mail services, social networks, cloud storage, messaging apps, search engines… all “for free”. And we use them and upload our entire lives in these services, they know our names, where we live, who our friends are, where I’m at, what I’m doing, what I will do, where I work, what do I like, my searches, my internet history, my pictures… everything. And these companies USE this information, for displaying ads, for social/cultural researches and Edward Snowden even taught us how they even handle this information of people to governments.
That’s right people, this services are not for free, your paying them by giving away all of your personal information.
Being conscious about this then I realized how people is giving away all of their information, all of their privacy to this huge companies for free. The whole story flipped upside down.
Many people usually argue me that they have nothing to hide, that they aren’t involved in nothing illegal. But this has nothing to do with that, is an idea sometimes difficult to grasp that your information is very valuable and have to be more conscious about it.
One thing is true, if we use the internet we’re exposed to giving away information, but we have the option of controlling this a bit more. Here are a set of apps that are very good and protect your information and don’t track any of your activities on the internet.
- Browser: Firefox is in / Google Chrome is out!
- Search engine: duckduckgo.com is in / Google is out!
- Web mail: fastmail.fm is in / Gmail is Out!
- Cloud Storage: SpiderOak is in / Dropbox is out!
- Messaging: Telegram is in / Whatsapp is out!
AND PLEASE DON’T USE FACEBOOK ANYMORE IF YOU RESPECT YOURSELVES.
