I too am white with a black son who is 11 yrs old and already taller than me. His Dad just had “the talk” with him last week and it is breaking my heart. He already knows he’s not allowed to take his nerf guns out of the house, but I hadn’t explained why. He too is gentle and loving and protective of his smaller friends. I have been aware of how he is seen by others since he was three years old and accused of stealing in a bookstore. I agree that we have to be vocal about examining our privilege and asking our white friends and colleagues to do the same, it is the only way we are going to dismantle the systemic racism.
