I would propose the battle over HTML between Microsoft and the open source community as an example of an equivalent standards war. You had Microsoft throwing all sorts of nonsense into their implementation to make things easy for a certain type of developer. (Macromedia did too with flash/coldfusion).

The rest of the world saw security issues and a cavalier attitude to existing standards and organization bodies and eventually fully rejected Microsoft’s extensions and incompatibilities. Latest Internet Explorer is quite standards compliant.
