Disclaimer: This Case Study was created for a college course, this website redesign is not in use.

Established in 2012, Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary provides a loving home for dogs within the last years of their lives. They offer services to rehabilitate and give medical aid to the older dogs they take care of, in addition to offering a foster care system for them, at no cost of the family that chooses to take care of them! OFSDS also allows people from around the world to watch the dogs live and play within the Sanctuary throughout all hours of the day. Their mission also includes to work with other dog rescue groups to promote the adoption of senior dogs.

Our Objective:

To boost traffic on the website and gain an increase in donations. This includes the modernization of the site while remaining sophisticated.

User Personas:

The focus of both personas were people who have an affinity for dogs, or other animals. Middle Aged Suburbia however, the client’s preferred — or target audience over the College Student. This is because the College Student is more likely not to donate, while MAS has a higher chance of donating to the Sanctuary.

User Scenario:

In this scenario, Middle Aged Suburbia’s persona is traversing the site to find different ways of donating to the Sanctuary. They begin by logging on to the site, and complete their visit by submitting a donation to the Sanctuary.

Mapping out the New Site:

Simplification of the site was highly necessary. Organization of the site into different sections with pages that correspond to one another was key. Example: Volunteer falls under Donate, as one could donate their time to the Sanctuary.

Preliminary Designs: Wireframes:

Left: Wireframe for the Home page. Right: Wireframe for the Shop page.
Above: Wireframe for the main donation page.

Rough sketches of the actual website design. The idea was to keep things clear cut and focused on the donation objective of the client. Hence the focus on creating more than one call to action in terms of donations, on a single page.

Final Design Choices

Typography:

Modern and playful. Old style and sophisticated.

To fit somewhere between both User Persona’s are these typefaces. Two serifs in Baskerville and Adobe Garamond Pro Regular, and one sans serif in two different font styles with Avenir Next.

Color Palette:

The colors chosen were chosen because they are a little more playful than pure Cyan, giving the visitor a hint of Yellow or Magenta. Simple colors as to not take away from the importance of the donations that go to the dogs of the Sanctuary.

Tigger’s Importance:

Tigger is a beloved dog of the Sanctuary. The client requested that he be placed in a central role.

Per the client’s request, Tigger the dog was given a large role on the site — he is present on the home page!

Other Dogs:

The other dogs staying at the Sanctuary are just as important, its necessary to show how happy they are spending their time at the Sanctuary! Left: Cinnamon, with Oreo behind. Middle: Mack. Right: Maggie at 13 years old.

Final Designs:

Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary Modern Logo

Official Adoption of modern logo over the classic OFSDS logo. This logo is much clearer in its message, and representation of a dog. It is also more playful.

Inclusion of a navigation bar that is clean and clear. Dropdown menu also shows off the newly organized pages under each option. In the final navigation tab, there are six important options.

Left: Home Screen with navigation. Middle: Direct Donation Form. Right: Volunteer Information Page.
