Learning Modern Art History Through Artist-Inspired Tarot Cards
14 Tarot Cards I Designed, Based On The Traditional Suit Of Wands
These 14 tarot cards are done in the styles of a variety of famous artists, as part of a fun project I’ve been working on for four years. I plan to finish next October. So far, I have done…
- the 22 Major Arcana cards
- the suit of microphones, which was based on the suit of swords
- the suit of weed, based on the suit of Pentacles
- and this year was the suit of paint, based on the suit of wands
- NEXT YEAR will be the suit of albums, based on the suit of cups
You can see some of my previous cards here.
I will provide links to the artists’ original art, but the pictures in this blog are my drawings and interpretations of these artistic influences, merged with the images from the original tarot card pictures, which you can easily Google. This is based on the traditional suit of wands. Just substitute the word “wands” for “paint.” For example, my first card is the Ace Of Paint. Google “Ace Of Wands” to find the original tarot card.
The aces are always just a hand, coming out of a cloud and holding the suit symbol, so this one had a hand holding a wand. I made it a paintbrush and then added the paint splatters because it’s supposed to be based on the artist Jackson Pollock, who is famous for his paint splatter art.
Jackson Pollock: Ace Of Paint
Wassily Kandinsky : Two Of Paint
Joan Miro: 3 Of Paint
Christo & Jeanne-Claude: 4 Of Paint
Henri Matisse: 5 Of Paint
Roy Lichtenstein: 6 Of Paint
Rasterms: 7 Of Paint
Paul Klee: 8 Of Paint
Mark Rothko: 9 Of Paint
Rose Piper: 10 Of Paint
Keith Haring: Page Of Paint
Pablo Picasso: Knight Of Paint
Yayoi Kusama: Queen Of Paint
Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Of Paint
Thanks for viewing these. Next October, I plan to finish the project and eventually have them made into tarot cards. I also have a brand new book out now, with lots of music, art, movies, and books mentioned throughout. It’s about an alternative high school for smart and creative kids, dealing with addictions and mental health issues in the 90s. They read banned books in class and talk about censorship and human rights as they come up with new rules after a girl is expelled for defending herself physically against a boy who sexually harassed her.
