Societies image today:

In todays society different men and women are perceived a certain way, women have to be sexy but also not too revealing and men have to be sensitive but not too sensitive that people question their manly hood. This idea of image is every where but it is consistently in the fashion industry, many different models are chosen based on there appearance and how much they weigh. This is a huge controversy because most of the models that are chosen are a size two or lower. Is the fashion industry forcing men and women to have this idea of body image or is it just an artistic style.

Why is image important?

This is important because in many cases people have insecurities about there bodies as well as what they should wear with there body type. This topic is very important to many people in the world especially young adults who are trying to find themselves. In the New York Times article called The Plus-Size Modeling World has a new Star: and it’s a Guy by Michelle Green, Mr. Miko says, “For me the coolest thing about this is the idea that kids like me can look at a website or a magazine and see somebody their size instead of those Adonises”. As we all know kids self esteem is pretty low in there younger years and seeing skinny models affects them. Becoming more body diverse in fashion could be an artistic way of showing off a line of clothing. It would appeal to more buyers and help that company become more successful.

In the article by Vanessa Friedman called Calvin Klein gets a plus size controversy a Calvin Klein spokeswomen said, “The Perfectly Fit line was created to celebrate and cater to the needs of different women, and these images are intended to communicate that our new line is more inclusive and available in several silhouettes in an extensive range of sizes”. Although the women that was said to be a plus sized model was not plus sized, which made the clothing line very uniformed. This was a problem because his campaign for underwear was meant for every women and every size for women, however the models didn’t show as much diversity in the shoots for the campaign. Causing uncertainty for his line of underwear as well as his company. However this could have been a great campaign if the body image he was trying to portray actually happened. Therefore is this art or body image being portrayed in fashion?

How Does it affect people?

Mr. Miko is a plus sized male model who changed many peoples perspective toward the fashion industry. Made people believe that the fashion industry is not all about a skinny model but about all different body types of people. This appeals to the people in the world that are not in the fashion industry, this allows people to see a person with perhaps the same amount of body weight as them. This could be for body image or the clothing line wanted to portray a different style for every size.

Why I am Interested?

I believe this topic to be important because it affects many people throughout the world. I hope to uncover the real truth behind different trends in the fashion industry as well as learning what fashion is all about. In the end of all this I hope to be more aware of this industry, so I can be content in joining the fashion industry in the future.
