DWARKA-The City Underwater

The mythical city of Dwarka is founded by Lord Krishna which subsequently got submerged under sea. The city today located in the coastal town in Jamnagar, Gujarat.After killing his own uncle Kansh, lord krishna left Mathura and set up a kingdom called Dwarka which was a very old kingdom and a developed civilization whose ruins are found under water. The city name itself says gateways it got its name because the city had lots of doors. Due to the constant attack on the Mathura while Krishna was ruling it then he decided to set up a new kingdom on west coast to protect his citizens. The city was built by the divine architect Vishwakarma himself.

It is one of the four dhamas( sacred place for hindu pligrimage).According to archaelogical survey, the carbon dating states the city to be 9500 years old which means it is older than the Sumerian civilizations. From the ruins of the submerged city they have found the stone structures of different shapes and sizes,walls,pottery,beads.

Ancient Dwarka

The kingdom of Dwarka was well fortified and can only be accessed through the ships. The kingdom gain a lot of fame with 900 palaces in it. The kingdom was five miles long and two miles wide. Scientists believed that the area was submerged when the ice caps melted in the last Ice Age. Dwarka had flourished as a port during the period of the middle kingdoms of India. Krishna ruled Dwarka for 36 years and after his death Yadavs started to fight among each other. Dwarka was believed to be attacked with a flying machine Vimana according to Hindu mythology. Bajra Nag was the last ruler of the yadhavansh. It is also said that Gandhari had cursed Krishna after the death of her 101 sons in kurukshetra that his kindom will be drown and clan will be vanished.

The city’s Dwarkadish temple is dedicated to Krishna was originally built around 2,500 years ago but was destroyed by Sultan Mahumd Begada and subsequently rebuilt in the 16th century.The Dwarkadish temple is constructed out of granite and sandstone . The temple is of Nagara style of Architecture with 5 floors, 60 pillars in mandapam. The shikhar height is about 37.83 meter.The city of Dwarka today is still a holy place for Hindus and a lots of Hindu pilgrims visit the place.
