Yes, There CAN Be Too Many Ideas in Business

So how do you focus on what is most important?

When you’re an entrepreneur, people want to give you advice and coaching and ideas all the time.

Thank goodness I am not a tech entrepreneur! It would drive me batty to hear about everyone’s app ideas, or how they’re going to be “the next Facebook/Uber/Snapchat.”

Instead, I’m a writer, and people tell me their stories.

It is insanely interesting, and I am a naturally nosy person, so if you meet me on the street and want to tell me about your book or story idea, or your life story, GO FOR IT. I will listen, ask questions, and might even take notes. I’ll give you advice and resources.

I love it so much and it has been an amazing benefit of being a writer.

People are constantly sparking ideas in me or inspiring me in some way. It’s truly the best part of my chosen career.

Because I am always inspired, I find myself always thinking of new ideas I could add to my business. Book coaching, ghostwriting, writer’s workshops, webinar courses, writing another book, on and on.

It can be hard not to immediately start doing or offering a new idea. Sometimes, I can. Oh, I want to be a book coach? It takes two minutes to add it to my website and I can simply let people know I do it when on calls with them.

But creating a new class I want to teach or writing my next book are bigger commitments, and ones I have to really stop and consider if now is the right time.

So, I have decided to put off teaching my book writing mastermind — for now. I had a beautiful vision of peer critiques and teaching people how to write their own books from the ground up, how to come up with the right story and message, about working with editors and how to choose one, about writing from different points of view, how to craft a story, create an outline, and get past writers block. And I created and developed and launched it.

I loved leading the course and meeting and working with some amazing first-time authors. But I just simply don’t have the TIME right now to keep marketing and teaching the class. I am so busy with work that I just don’t have enough hours in my day to keep working on the course right now.

I have to continue to focus on my core services and protect my time.

It can be difficult to stop a new plan, especially when it feels like an exciting idea, but it is so important to focus on the revenue-generating business that you currently have, and make sure you have a proper work-life balance. As opposed to cramming another vertical in and not spending time with family and friends.

Yes, there CAN be too many ideas.

Instead of stretching yourself too thin over a multitude of different ideas and concepts, it is best to focus on the core of your business. What has the best margins? Which products or services generate the most revenue while also making good use of your time?

As an entrepreneur or a small business owner, your time is your most valuable commodity. If you have 10 different streams of revenue, are ANY of them getting the attention they truly need to be as profitable or as successful as they could be? What could you pause that could be picked back up at a later date when you have the time and necessary energy and focus to nurture it to successful fruition? How will stopping working on 3 of them make sure the rest flourish?
