Who are you?
How would you describe yourself defines how you shape yourself

As a part of our company culture, every new joiner has to describe a fun fact about herself. As easy that sounds and might be for many people, I found myself lost and thinking quite hard about it! What did I think was a fun fact about me or my journey so far? Was it the fact that I left my home at 16 for an exchange year to France — no many people would do that, nothing fun about it! Could it be that I played cricket professionally until under 17s and then had 4 shoulder surgeries and would not play again? — probably will be downer for most, again nothing interesting about it! The thoughts and suggestions kept coming and I kept putting them down, right until I was called and asked the question — fun fact about yourself! Finally, I ended up describing my interest in Indian mythology and stories and how they shape who we are! — probably not a fun fact but more like a belief I hold as a person when I am off work.
When we ask ourselves about who we are, the answer is usually not what you think you are, not what people think you are but most often what you think, people think you are. We continuously strive to create a story for ourselves not in our minds but in the minds of our viewers- everyone around us. Playing this story in our head often shapes what we do, how we live our lives and finally how we are perceived by others. The amazing takeaway is that, you always get the chance to shape yourself in the way you want to be remembered.
So who are you? Would you describe you by the work you do, by your education, by your hometown? Could it be a description of your habits, of your daily life? Honestly, it could be anything you want it to be. I am a person who is interested in learning about human behavior, and what makes them do what they do. That is the reason, I took up Marketing as my career path (although commercial), it allows me to see how people behave and what really addresses their needs. I love to understand what motivates people, what drives them to achieve, what meaning they give to their daily tasks.
Craft your story, tell yourself what you ought to stand for and the story will unfold automatically. Along the way, you always will have the chance to introduce new characters, new inspirations and new directions.
