Should Art Have A Meaning?

Art is defined as the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. In history, art has always had a purpose. Most artist and sculptures created art rarely at their leisure but rather at the request of someone else. Now days, artists mostly create art at their leisure creating their own meaning behind their creative art piece. But who said art has to have a meaning? Who was in authority to declare this proclamation? What is an artist wanted to create something just because they felt like it.

Let’s take a look at people with tattoos. Tattoos have been around for centuries. Most tattoos in history have been for a purpose where a lot of them were required in cultures such as Native American and Polynesian. Tattoos used to tell a story however, now days people can get tattoos for whatever reason they choose. Some people still get tattoos with a meaning behind it whether it be because of family, religion, or personal. I’ve had some friends get tattoos on Friday the 13th. When I would ask them why, they would respond with “because they were half off”. These half off tattoos were preselected tattoos by the artist such as a heart or a turtle.

So you see, art necessarily does not have to have a meaning, art can just be an expressive outlet for artist to use. If I wanted to paint a rainbow on a paper just because, I should be able to without someone questioning my reasons behind why I did what I did. Art can be as simple as you want to make it because that is the whole reason behind the definition of the word. Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination.
