My Motivation for Becoming a Full Stack Software Engineer

From my very first hand-held gaming console as a kid, to what I am choosing to study for my upper division education, technology has been a major part of getting me to where I am today. While I have been blessed, and have been fortunate to have trouble-free upbringing, I have had my fair share of adversity as well.

When I graduated High School back in 2011, I somewhat panicked when the end drew near. My classmates had their plans for what they were going to do after High School ended, and there I was, no plan, and no idea on how to get started on my career path. Instead of immediately going to college, I decided to join the military. The main reason for joining is that I wanted to give back to my country, and defend the freedoms that I have come to cherish from my life here, but I also had to face the facts that I could not afford to go to college. While it has not fully covered all the expenses a post-secondary education incurs, it has given me the luxury of being able to go to college, which I would not have otherwise gotten.

As I was studying in college, and switching majors constantly, I realized that I really enjoyed learning about computers and technology. Since coming to that realization, I have decided to major in Computer Science, but due to unfortunate circumstances, I may have to cut my education short. Even though I am faced with this possibility, I am continuing to do my best in my studies at the University, and am actively complimenting my education with online technology courses in computer programming and information from sites such as Codecademy, Udemy, and many others.

When I found out that Holberton School is for those aspiring to be a Full Stack Software Engineer, and is taking an approach to the curriculum that I have longed for in my collegiate studies, I knew that I had to give it my best shot in seeking admission. I know that the road ahead of me is a long and arduous journey, but as Laozi once said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”, and as the great Jedi Master Yoda said to his young pupil Luke Skywalker, “Do or do not; there is no try.” Now is the time that I begin to accelerate my aspirations of becoming that Full Stack Software Engineer, and I believe that Holberton will give me the tools and experiences necessary to ensure my success, which I can then share with others when the time comes.
