Line 1, Chapter 1, Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu

We live in uncertain times; no surprises there, but right now uncertainty is amplified for pretty much everyone. In times of uncertainty, people turn to religion and spirituality as a desperate attempt to understand what comes next. Personally, I don’t understand religion and why people submit themselves to spirituality with such passion. I do understand that the idea of spirituality is a comforting one; to know that there is a higher power which makes sure that whatever happens, happens for a reason seems like a beautiful thought. …

“Futility of life” isn’t a groundbreaking concept; we’ve all been there at some point in our short lives, desperately trying to understand what it all means.

This pandemic situation that we’re in has perhaps put most of us in that state again, and let’s be honest, it’s not easy to break out of this cycle. It’s not easy to give your life purpose when there is uncertainty all around you.

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t me putting out the whole “Oh nothing has any meaning, fuck it all, what is the point of living” perspective. I find that whole doomer perspective too contrived to be something that people truly believe in. I would at least like to believe that people have these thoughts out of sheer helplessness and it’s just a way of them trying to make sense of how life has dealt them a shitty hand. …

With travel and tourism at a near-standstill and the vast majority of the world forced into a “staycation” inside their homes, people are craving the outside world. While travelling right now is both very unsafe and highly discouraged, there will soon be a time when the situation has settled and people are allowed to move!

“Tourism recovery typically begins locally,” said Elizabeth Monahan, spokesperson for Tripadvisor.com. “Travellers tend to first venture out closer to home, and visit their local eateries, stay local for a weekend getaway or travel domestically before a robust demand for international travel returns.”

Driving to a local spot near your homes is not only affordable but also supports the local economy! It helps you discover new local gems which you may have overlooked on your way to the generic overcrowded destinations! This move to local destinations reduces the waste overload in the overcrowded tourist spots, while also reducing the amount of jet fuel which is burnt off transporting people from one country to another! …

Along with the restriction in outside movement, and the closing of gyms to comply with social distancing measures, people find themselves sitting idle at home at the risk of developing health issues stemming from a sedentary lifestyle. This could single-handedly cause illnesses in people and put further pressure on the already overworked healthcare system!

However, the famous proverb “Necessity is the mother of invention” was not taken lightly by people across the globe; within weeks of the lockdown, fitness brands had to figure out a way to pivot their online presence into thought leaders in the fitness industry without the ability to sell products. This limitation allowed brands and influencers to come together to form various campaigns around people working out from the vicinity of their own homes with no expensive equipment! …

The concept of live-streaming music festivals has been around for a while, however, while everyone is stuck at home in the middle of a global lockdown it has become more of a “need of the hour”. With the recent NH7 Weekender #HappyAtHome, Houseparty #InTheHouse, and the #SGNProm by Some Good News bringing artists performing in their living rooms to your personal devices, live-streaming artists performing surely seems to be the way forward!

For most festival goers, live-streaming of a music festival isn’t exactly a brand new concept. In fact, what started off with Boiler Room streaming their event with a webcam taped to the wall of a disused boiler room, has now become almost an industry-standard involving multiple camera angles and drone shots! …

Amidst the ongoing crisis, restaurants everywhere are radically evolving into cloud kitchens. Cloud kitchens, also known as dark kitchens, ghost kitchens, or virtual kitchens, work as delivery-only formats of restaurants and don’t offer a dine-in facility. With the ongoing social distancing, the cloud kitchen format is more-or-less forced down the throat of struggling restaurants, however, a majority of restaurant owners are warming up to the idea of running a cloud kitchen.

While weighing the tradeoffs of running a cloud kitchen, it is honestly quite surprising that most restaurants haven’t converted to cloud kitchen only format already. …

An enormous number of workers worldwide who have been forced to work from home because of the ongoing pandemic may find themselves permanently working from home, according to a new survey from research firm Gartner. A big reason for this is a move by CFOs to find new ways to manage costs.

For a vast majority of the working population going to their workplace requires heavy commuting through traffic and crowded public transports which are incredibly stressful for most. Being at home allows people to skip the hustle of getting to their working space and start their work with the right mindset! …

The year of 2012 was dubbed “The Year of the MOOC” by The New York Times with hundreds of thousands of students enrolling in massive open online courses (MOOCs) being provided by some of the world’s best educational institutions on platforms such as Coursera, Udacity, Udemy, and edX.

In 2020, unlike the aforementioned volunteer institutions, educators have to hastily move into the world of online masterclasses. This has allowed institutions and teachers all over the world to put their own spin on the way they conduct their classes. Some choose independent platforms, some choose MOOC platforms, while some rely on platforms such as Slack, Zoom, and WhatsApp as ways to engage and teach their students amidst the lockdown. The lean setup required allows individual creators to conduct their own video tutorials and all-out masterclasses through platforms like Youtube, Instagram Live and even TikTok! …

We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are. Anaïs Nin

If we flip the same adage on its head, we get “We are what we see”, which also stands true. Humans inherently attain their characteristics from their experiences, and visual artists express these experiences through their work.
Every artist has a formative stage in life which greatly influences the way they paint, their subject matters, themes and even the colours they use.

In this project, we plan to learn what Generative Adversarial Networks are and assess how neural networks mimic the human brain in terms of creativity and inheriting aesthetics from visual cues. …

A basic understanding of linear algebra is highly essential to get started with anything in the field of data science. This post will help you understand basic concepts in linear algebra through illustrated visuals. Refer to Ian Goodfellow’s Deep Learning Book for a detailed mathematical description of the concepts we cover in this post. For a detailed description of all NumPy functions, refer to the official documentation here.

Scalars, Vectors, Matrices and Tensors

The field of linear algebra involves several types of mathematical objects. Names can sometimes get confusing, so it is a good idea to go through this section quickly to understand the lingo.
