Thanks for sharing your process! It looks very similar to the one the Financial Times is using in their component library, Origami (when I worked there, at least).

At Salesforce we’ve built a small utility that helps us doing just that, called sass-deprecate: https://github.com/salesforce-ux/sass-deprecate

It takes the same principle as the @warn Sass directive your team is using, and adds some sugar on top to make sure we don’t forget to remove those pieces from our codebase.
