The Grand Canal

The Grand Canal is a symbol of the reunification of Sui.

In China, a grand river called Yellow River in the north, Huai He River in the central district and Yangtze River in the south was used as the main transportation network.

From 220 to 589, the chaos of the “Era of the Northern and Southern Dynasties,” which lasted for about 370 years, made two completely different societies, the nomadic dynasties of the North and the agricultural dynasties of the South, because of the invasion of nomadic tribes and the massive Han peoples migration are pushed south of the river.

In this situation, in 589, the ‘Sui’ of the northern dynasty attacked the ‘Jin’ of the south dynasty, unifying China.

The construction of a canal linking the South, a granary to the North, which used to be a political center, became an important task for the Sui nation.

Munjae, the first emperor of Sue, opened the area called Kwangtong Geo first. And the second emperor Yangjae, mobilized more than one million peoples every month for six years from the following year and built up the canal Gangnam, Sanyang etc to connect Yellow river to Yangtze river.

All of these are collectively called the Grand Canal. The canal is 30 to 60 meters wide, about 3 meters deep, and about 2,000 kilometres in length.

1.Spirited Away

The reason why I chose this picture is that the scene where the main character of the movie, Sen, cleans the god of the river, was reminiscent of Emperor Yangjae mobilization of one million people to build the Grand Canal.

2.Cooking Master Boy

The scene of the memes I used is also one of the moments when the judges admire the dishes made by the main character, Yumaoshin. The reason why I chose this picture because the serious expression and open mouth in the picture seemed to represent the king that I imagined.
