Reflections on online education. Affirmations for online learners.

I have finished my first month as a full-time online learner. I’ve had a great attitude and I have learned so much. The material has been challenging. My perspective about online education has become dramatically more positive. I am optimistic about online education as a delivery tool.

I’m proud to be part of my school. I think they are fantastic. No educational experience will be perfect because people aren’t perfect. But, I see people doing their best.

Online learning can make you feel disconnected. I miss talking face-to-face with students about mathematics.

However, my school offers many sources of community. We have a very active Slack channel and multiple live lectures each week. We can also make our own study groups. Because I wanted to connect, I spent a lot of time on Slack this morning, then I pair programmed for the first time. I was so excited to pair program. But, it was tricky and awkward — like a first date.

When I signed up for Learn, I had to agree to follow the guidelines in the screen shot below. I’ve reiterated these and added my own below. I printed the screen shot and posted it by my front door so I am reminded daily.

Signed March 13. Committed to Learn.
