Basic 3D Printer

3D printing, 3D printing, 3D printing, something we hear all the time. But what is it? 3D printing is essentially a machine that can create 3D objects by melting plastic and “laying it” layer by layer in specific shapes. More technically it is a machine that pushes plastic with a motor (called an extruder) into something that melts plastic (something called a hot head — which is essentially a metal nozzle that heats up a lot) and then that plastic then comes out in very small lines, and is moved in different patterns with the help of some motors on the machine.

That is essentially a 3D printer. A few other handy things to know that I have picked up in my time of 3D printing, and that could definitely make you look smart at a party are: You can “print” using different types of plastic, to make different strength and quality items (normal plastics used are called ABS and PLA). A heated bed is what the first layer of plastic goes onto and is normally made of glass or metal that heats up, in order to keep the plastic stuck down to it. A 3D printer is told what to make from a computer or SD card using a programming language called Gcode (which tells the printer how to move and “extrude” plastic).
