I’m not sure what its like in the US market, but in Europe the catalog of movies is abysmal.

It has been in decline, from a quality perspective, for some time here in the U.S. The issue is the intersection is the “x” of content providers getting wise to how valuable the content is meeting the “y” of bigger players being able to write much bigger checks than Netflix. So, they rely more and more on originals which has a multi-dimensional payout (acquisition/retention/more data to guide content creation). Thing is, if they can‘t make enough content, fast enough, the retention will suffer.
