Depression Detection with a Neural Network

MIT researchers developed a technology to detect depression by analyzing the language of patients in written and spoken form. The distinguishing part of their solution is that it doesn’t require specific questions or types of response. Instead it is ‘context-free’ and is able to use regular interactions of patients as a data source to discover patterns indicative of depression. This depression detection can be a help for therapists to find and analyze mental issues better and faster.

For Now: Humans are still better than AI at Dota 2

A team of professional video gamers prevailed over a group of cutting-edge AI algorithms in a landmark galactic mêlée held two weeks ago. The AI algorithms were developed by OpenAI, an AI research nonprofit funded by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and others. Dubbed the OpenAIFive, each algorithm is a neural network that learns to play the game through a technique known as reinforcement learning. The game, which took place at the International Dota 2 Championships in Vancouver, Canada, showed that humans are still a lot smarter than AI software at complex tasks that include teamwork. (However, the algorithms have previously defeated several teams of less-skilled players.) Some have noted that, instead of relying on a view of the screen as a human player does, the OpenAI Five use the game’s application programming interface (API). These means the algorithms can instantly access more information about a game.

Google’s Free AI Tool To Help Companies Identify Child Sexual Abuse Material

Stamping out the spread of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) is a priority for big internet companies. However, it is also a difficult and harrowing job for those on the frontline — human moderators who have to identify and remove abusive content. That’s why Google just released a free AI software designed to help these individuals. Most tech solutions in this domain work by checking images and videos against a catalog of previously identified abusive material. This sort of software, known as a “crawler,” is an effective way to stop people sharing known previously-identified CSAM. But it can’t catch material that hasn’t already been marked as illegal. For that, human moderators have to step in and review content themselves. “Google’s AI tool triages flagged material, helping moderators work faster” This is where Google’s new AI tool will help. Using the company’s expertise in machine vision, it assists moderators by sorting flagged images and videos and “prioritizing the most likely CSAM content for review.” This should allow for a much quicker reviewing process. In one trial, says Google, the AI tool helped a moderator “take action on 700 percent more CSAM content over the same time period.”

  • New Technologies in the World of Auctions
One of Andy Warhol’s paintings (worth millions of dollars) is the first artwork to have been tokenized and sold on blockchain. The organizers of the auction claim that “Tokenisation of assets is the most prominent and exciting use case of blockchain technology.” Another new movement in the world of auctions is the selling of portraits created by AI, which will start in October (as announced by Christie’s in New York).
