Even after 49 years since Gulshan Roy’s “Deewar” (released in Mumbai on January 24, 1975) directed by Yash Chopra, the film is still known as “Aajcha”. One of the most poignant and dramatic moments in the film, which has struck a chord with at least four generations of fans, is Mera Bap Chor Hai, engraved on the hands of rebellious Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) at a very young age, Mera Bap Chor Hai… (Satyen Kappu).

Through a systematic conspiracy, the father (Satyen Kappu) of brothers Vijay and Ravi (Shashi Kapoor) gets caught in a web of misunderstandings during the labor movement. As soon as they are brutally beaten by the workers, it is written that the family will be disgraced for life on Vijay’s hands as punishment. From this Vijay keeps smoldering in his mind. The mother (Nirupa Roy) then raises her children by doing carpentry work, lifting bricks for building construction.

In Salim Javed’s “Deewar”, the very tight screenplay and sharp dialogues, even the dialogue ‘Mera Bap Chor Hai’ had the ring of a character. (Needless to say, the film should be watched.) And this ‘father’ was played by Satyen Kappu, a versatile and hard-working actor. Satyen Kappu made a name for himself by making a very successful move from many such small roles. In fact, as he decided to focus all his efforts on character roles while entering the film industry, he got the opportunity to play many types of characters and worked with many types of directors and actors and worked in the Hindi film industry for almost forty years.(Satyen Kappu)

Satyen Kappu was born on February 7, 1931 in a Brahmin family in Mumbai. Father Budhsen Sharma had a business of making Delight Kulfi. His father wanted him and his brother Radheshyam to manage their home business. When Satyen Kappu was coming of age, both the brothers went to the Gurukul as their parents passed away. While there, Satyen Kappu became an ardent fan of Dadamuni Ashok Kumar. While studying acting as a hobby in Indian People’s Theatre, he started thinking that he should enter the field of acting as well. His struggle for opportunities in the film industry paid off and director Bimal Roy gave him his first opportunity, albeit for a small role. The movie was, ‘Kabuliwala’ (1961). At that time, the atmosphere in the film industry was very different. New actors were being met by leading producers and directors. Knowing their expectations and capabilities. He was also reassuring in ‘promising work’. That is why the new actors who came into the film industry at that time started moving slowly by doing each and every film. And succeeded in underlining its existence as soon as it got a good opportunity.

This is what happened with Satyen Kappu. That’s why he played many different roles from ‘Kabuliwala’ (1961) to ‘Raja Bhaiya’ (2003). His real name is Satyendra Sharma. He was called Kappu from his childhood, he changed his last name from Satyendra to Satyen for the film industry. And then within a few years, he acted in as many as 390 films, going by the name “Satyen Kappu”.

His demand increased from the beginning of the seventies when he was doing films like Premapatra (1962), Bandini (1963). Kati Patang, Toy, Lal Patthar, Do Gaj Zamin Ke Neehi, Anurag, Fake Coins, Diwar, Shole, Mahbhar, Namak Halal, Khel Khel May, Mr. Natwarlal, Naya Kadam, Red Rose, Ajaka MLA Ramavatar… the names kept on growing. During this journey, Satyen Kappu continued to get roles as police inspectors on a large scale. The role of a police inspector in ‘Zanjeer’ is small but memorable.

Price (Inspector Deshpande), Haste Jakham (Inspector Kumar), Benam (Inspector Jadhav), Dawn (Inspector Verma), Patthar se Takkar (Inspector Kulkarni), Kaid (Inspector Kaushik), Pratigya (Inspector D’Souza), Khatro Ke Khiladi (Inspector Narayan) as soon as he was promoted as a senior police inspector in the movie Qayamat, Police Commissioner Albert D’Souza in the movie Professor Pyarelal, Police Commissioner in Katil, Ashanti, Baji, Shaath, Intakam Ki Aag, Jadugar, Jaljala, Gopi Kishan, Police Commissioner, Saya, Step Bhai , a lawyer in the movie Ankho Mein Tum Ho, a judge in the movie ‘Gair’, he made a big step by playing various roles.

K. Chaudhary, including the father of the hero or the heroine, etc., increased his recognition by playing various types of roles. Although such roles have a place in the script, their length is not fixed, even if such roles are shot on a large scale, there is no telling how long the role will last on the collection table, while even on the set, the hero has to take a bit of a secondary role. By adopting such an unbiased procedure, there is no heartache. The career continues to move forward. Many of the films that you have acted in are closed in the middle. Filmmaking culture is a completely different matter. This is his brief introduction on the occasion of Satyen Kappu.

Satyen Kappu, who had followed such a long course, had to bear illness due to old age. And he died on 27 October 2007.
