Music X Tech X Creators at @TOABerlin
On the 15th of July European Innovation Hub and Universal Music hosted a special event bringing together startups creating new music experiences, artists, producers and Berlin’s startup community.
In Berlin a vibrant music and club scene coexists alongside world leading professional audio companies Ableton, Native Instruments and startups that bring together talent in music and engineering. This talent is known for creating products targeting the city’s vibrant music and cultural scene which celebrates collaboration between artists and creative technologists. You can see this in action at annual events such as as Republica & Transmediale that explore contemporary (and future) topics at the intersection of culture, the arts and technology.
In recent years Berlin has morphed into a global hub for startups with events such as Tech Open Air leading the way in celebrating the fast growing startup community every summer — check out their latest numbers here.
Berlin: Startups, Talent, Music & Audio Experiences.
Great new startup products are coming out of the Berlin. We know this from our experience running the EuropeanPioneers accelerator which launched companies such as SplashVR & INFARM.
This is a fascinating time for startups to get their products developed, launched and distributed globally — particularly if they are developing physical products. The combination of a global backdrop of DIY makers, cheap & accessible hardware prototyping kits, fab labs, crowdfunding on Kickstarter and Indiegogo which lets early adopters support new products and access to internationally scalable production services from cities like Shenzen — are all resulting in a slew of new products including new experiences for music creators and music listeners.
Music & audio tech product development is a specialised field that requires engineering know-how and music expertise. Berlin excels at this as it is home to leading professional audio companies and also has an internationally renown clubbing scene. It’s no surprise that Berlin has notable startups creating new music and audio experiences.
Bringing together the music and audio tech community at Tech Open Air.
At European Innovation Hub we regularly come across local music & audio tech startups. Many I’ve seen are run by specialised teams who only occasionally cross paths with their peers and the people who will use their products at professional events for music technologies. We wanted to host an event to bring them together in Berlin to celebrate music and audio tech startups regionally with an audience of artists, music producers and the tech community. Together with Universal Berlin (thanks for the roof Jonas & the Universal Music Team!) we organised this event as a special Tech Open Air Satellite event in TOA16.

It was great to meet everyone! All the startup teams had a great time demo-ing their products. There was a good energy in the networking and demos that followed the pitch. We’re looking forward to meeting everyone again at the next event. Stay tuned!
