Wow, that brings back the memories. Everyone used to learn this back in high school algebra. It was taught a bit differently, usually with more emphasis on the algorithm and less on the explanation, but so was long division. I remember working out a version using continued subtraction of odd numbers that worked with a manual Olivetti adding machine. It worked, but it cranked out a lot of paper tape.
