Plastic bags are bad and for the most part unnecessary
Not only land animals are threatened by plastic bags, sea, and sky animals are being harmed by plastic bags as well. Plastic bags littering is a huge issue even though the fines are high but people mange to get away with it.
A plastic bag can never fully decompose, it just get smaller and smaller. However, some researches believe that it takes more than five hundred years to fully break it down.
Landfills pile up with thousands of plastic bags everyday, they try to help out with recycling, but the process is not fast enough to catch up with the amount of plastic bag being used everyday.
It is a very light material and can easily drift with the wind and end up in the ocean, which is another issue, because we already have multiple huge ocean gyres that have been killing an enormous amount of animals. Plastic bags are quite commonly mistaken for food by animals, especially when the bags carry food, if an animal ate a plastic bag they may not be able to digest real food and die a slow death from starvation, infection, and sometimes chocking on plastic bags.
Some grocery shops have banned plastic bags completely, while others help raise awareness by charging a small amount of money per plastic bag, and encourage the use of paper bags instead, this is a good step to raise awareness of the impact of the plastic bags on the environment.
