My Daily Life in Kyoto as an Airbnb Host — My Story, My Daily Life
Introduction
Hello! My name is Tatsuya Numata, the host of Kamon Inn Toji Higashi, an Airbnb guesthouse in Kyoto.
I am 36 years old, living in this beautiful city and working every day to share a slice of Kyoto life with travelers from all over the world.
This article is my very first post on Medium. From now on, I will be writing about my daily life in Kyoto — not just the famous temples or tourist spots, but the everyday routines, small joys, and real experiences of living here. My hope is that these stories will help you feel closer to Kyoto, and maybe even inspire you to stay with me during your trip.
About Me
I used to be a Japanese civil servant for nearly 10 years, working from the age of 20 to 29.
At 29, I made a big decision: I left my stable government job and opened a café. That step completely changed my path in life, and eventually led me to become an Airbnb host.
Now, hosting is more than just work for me — it is a way to connect with people from across the globe and share the beauty of Japan.

My Life in Kyoto
As an Airbnb host, I live a pretty ordinary life — but it’s this “ordinary” that I want to share with you.
- Travel: I love solo trips abroad. Meeting new people and experiencing new cultures inspires me.
- Sento (public baths): Japanese public baths are part of my weekly routine. They’re not just about relaxing, but also about connecting with local culture.
- Learning English: I am still studying every day, hoping to get better so I can talk more freely with guests.
- Running & Meditation: Morning runs and quiet moments of meditation keep me grounded.
- Cooking & Food: I often cook at home, but I also love discovering new restaurants and local eateries in Kyoto.
These simple habits make up my life here. And when guests stay at my place, I love recommending them my favorite café, the best local sento, or even just sharing my running route around Toji Temple.
Why I Host on Airbnb
For me, Airbnb is not just about offering a room. It is about sharing the real Japan — the daily rhythms, the local atmosphere, and the feeling of “living” in Kyoto, not just visiting.
My biggest joy is when guests tell me:
“Staying here felt like experiencing real Kyoto life.”
Through hosting, I want to:
- Show Japan’s everyday beauty to the world
- Make many friends from around the globe
That is my motivation, and the reason I keep writing, learning, and welcoming guests.
What’s Next
This is just the beginning. On Medium, I plan to post regularly about:
- My routines as a Kyoto local
- The hidden gems of daily Kyoto life
- Personal reflections as an Airbnb host
