I took interest in Kamala Harris for two reasons — one, because her first name Kamala, is the same as my own sister’s, who is also an American citizen and two, because she became the first woman Vice President, breaking all political glass ceilings.

At the writing of this review, Kamala Harris has already been sworn in as the Vice President of the United States. She made a first in two categories — a first woman Vice President and the first coloured woman to be elected as the Vice President of the United States. She serves under the 49th President of the United States of America, Joe Biden.

One paragraph in the Preface stands out: “We cannot solve out most intractable problems unless we are honest about what they are, unless we are willing to have difficult conversations and accept what facts make plain.”

Not only America, many countries across the globe face this predicament. In the name of politics, truth is buried deep in abyss of time and integrity gets entombed with it.

In her book, Kamala has spoken at length about the fights that she had put up since she was a child. During her growing years, she was brought to protests by her parents — Donald Harris and Shyamala Gopalan Harris. It has been her late mum who had been the greatest inspiration in her life. The late Dr Syamala’s famous words — Be the first, never the last — ring constantly across the book.
