Every Ten Seconds

Okay, I’m going to tell you something that will probably make you angry. I genuinely liked Batman vs. Superman.

Okay, okay. I know you’re mad. Slowly count to ten and keep reading.

You done? Great. Now, I’m really about to bum you out.

By the time you reached ten, another child died from a hunger-related cause.

That’s crazy to think about. Every ten seconds, one child dies because they can’t get proper food. It doesn’t seem real in our world with competitive eating and cooking competitions. But food insecurity causes more deaths annually than AIDs, Malaria, and Tuberculosis combined.

This is without a doubt a tragedy and the high rate of deaths has caused unimaginable damage to the planet and the human race. For all we know, the person who found the cure for cancer, the person who ended global warming, and the person who finally told Justin Bieber to cut the shit and get over himself already all died before their fifth birthday because their families couldn’t afford to feed them.

There is some good news: right now we produce enough food to sufficiently feed all 9 billion people on our planet. It’s just a matter of actually getting the food to them. There are many wonderful nonprofits helping with that right now, and there is a lot you can do to help this, even when you’re on your lunch break. The World Food Programme makes it really easy for you to donate your time or money to help with their fantastic causes. They provide disaster relief, aid to refugees, and also work with schools in impoverished areas so kids can get meals at school. They have a study website called Freerice that you might have heard about. You get quizzed on vocabulary, math, even the SATs and for every question you got right, FreeRice donates ten grains of rice. It’s a good thing to do that’s completely free. You can also donate money to help them as well.

You can also find blogs or businesses that donate to WFP and other hunger-fighting nonprofits and provide them with your business. On my blog, Lover’s Quarrel, half of the affiliate earnings I get from books bought from AllRomance goes to the World Food Programme. If you like romance novels, then I would love for you to stop by. It’s an easy way to do some good while getting something new to read.

But the important thing to remember is that you can do something. Whether it’s donating time or money, it’s important to help fight food insecurity. Unlike cancer, the plastic epidemic, and the Kardashians, world hunger has a clear solution waiting to be used. And it’s up to us to take action.
